Education transforms us from dependency to independence. However, despite being well-educated, many of us struggle to define what education truly means. Often, education is associated with the name of a university or a professor. Yet, it’s important to understand that education extends beyond human institutions.
According to Vedic traditions, education is a tool that enables us to move from dependency to independence. For instance, a child initially knows nothing and relies entirely on their mother. By observing and learning from their mother, the child gradually gains the knowledge and skills needed to become independent.
Today, however, education often seems restricted and limiting. The Vedic tradition emphasizes the journey from dependency to independence, and this can be seen clearly in the practice of yoga. Yoga tradition teaches us to understand the world, food, water, body, breath, mind, and intellect, helping us to not be bound by these elements but to transcend them and experience our true nature.
Unfortunately, modern education often confines us to the materialistic world. This restriction leads to numerous problems in life. For example, we tend to prioritize our mobile devices over our own well-being. Imagine being a computer engineer who knows everything about computers but little about oneself. This imbalance highlights a significant issue in contemporary education.
To truly benefit from education, we must look beyond the materialistic confines and embrace the holistic, liberating aspects of traditional practices, such as those found in Vedic and yoga traditions. Only then can we achieve true independence and self-awareness.
